Operation Pillar of Defense: Death Toll Rises in Israel – Hamas Conflict

In response to a continuous barrage of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip the IDF has launched a widespread campaign against terror targets in Gaza – Operation Pillar of Defense.  More than 700 rockets have struck Israel since the beginning of the year, and more than 120 since Saturday. The two main goals of the operation are to protect Israeli civilians and to cripple the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza.

Yesterday, the IDF killed Ahmed Jabri, the head of Hamas’ military wing, in the Gaza Strip. Jabri was a senior Hamas operative who served in the upper echelon of the Hamas’ command and was directly responsible for executing terror attacks against Israel in the past. Thousands attended his funeral in Gaza on Thursday and another airstrike on Khan Younis killed three terrorists who were preparing to launch rockets. The IDF braced for an escalation in the rocket fire during Jabari’s funeral.

The IDF has been successful in significantly damaging Hamas’ long-range missile capabilities (40 km/25 mi range) & underground weapons storage facilities.  And, this morning the IDF dispersed leaflets above several locations in the Gaza Strip, warning local residents to stay away from Hamas and other terrorist organizations.

The contents of the leaflet:

“Important announcement for the residents of the Gaza Strip:

For your own safety, take responsibility for yourselves and avoid being present in the vicinity of Hamas operatives and facilities and those of other terror organizations that pose a risk to your safety.

Hamas is once again dragging the region to violence and bloodshed. The IDF is determined to defend the residents of the State of Israel. This announcement is valid until quiet is restored to the region.

    Israel Defense Forces Command.”

As of 1:32 a.m. ET, the Iron Dome had intercepted 13 rockets fired from Gaza into Israel but 3 Israeli civilians have been killed and a baby critically injured by the rocket fire.

Earlier today, the IDF targeted a rocket warehouse in Gaza.  The video is below:

For its part, Hamas shows no intention of backing down.  A statement by Hamas’s armed wing reads: “The Al-Qassam Brigades have vowed to turn the lives of Zionists into hell and make them regret the moment they decided to assassinate their esteemed leader. The coming days will prove the sincerity of our words.” The statement was  published by the Palestinian Media Center which is a Hamas affiliate.

According to IDF Spokesperson, Eytan Buchman, there is no specific timetable for when it will end. Buchman reports: “We will go on as long as we need to, we had over a million Israelis in bomb shelters over the last four days, that situation is untenable.”

Benghazi Update: Hillary Sidesteps Testifying and Newly Released DOD Timeline is Full of Discrepancies

Remember, it was Hilary Clinton who promised the father of Tyrone Woods, the ex-Navy Seal, who was murdered in Benghazi, that she would see to it that the maker of the You Tube video, “Innocence of Muslims,” would be arrested and prosecuted for causing his son to lose his life.  Bulls***t, Hil!   The United States did not have a law then that allowed anyone to be arrested, and prosecuted, for exercising one’s First Amendment right.  Perhaps the “authorities” can now detain American citizens, on a whim, and without due process, but then, when the casket lay in front of her, that wasn’t so.  (By the way, who among us believes it is only a matter of time before our individual blogs will disappear from the net?)  Hillary Clinton is worse than her husband, Bill I-did-not-have-sexual-relations-with-that-woman Clinton!  He is a nasty old man and so is she!  I would bet my last nickel that she does NOT have penis envy, and for the reason that she already has one.

During the President’s press conference, and after a reporter asked him about reasons Susan Rice continued to say that the video was responsible for the Benghazi 9-11-12 attack, he reacted in such a defensive way that made one think he is having an affair with Rice.  He immediately rushed to her defense, as if the question was rude and crude and way out of line.  It was not.  It was a legitimate question with a specific goal.  The question was ignored, but Obama spent a great deal of time dressing down the reporter who asked the question.  Another ignored question asked was if Obama did sign an order regarding deploying rescue help at the consulate and the CIA annex during and after the attack.  Again, another dressing down from the President, although this one less aggressive than the one regarding Rice.  However, true to form, Obama did not respond to that second question either, so we’re still doing the same ol’, same ol’ dance.  We ask a question, and Obama spits in our eye!

General Petraeus, and sex, is yet another distraction; and White House, you’re not fooling any of us!  Yes, dear friends, I am angry–very angry–I pounded this keyboard, getting my words out, as though I was pounding you-know-who’s-face!

Just Me

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declined an invitation to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which will take place on Thursday, regarding the Benghazi attack. But, Michael Courts, acting director of International Affairs and Trade for the Government Accountability Office, will be testifying, and so will a RAND Corp. analyst.

Clinton, “was asked to appear at House Foreign Affairs next week, and we have written back to the chairman to say that she’ll be on travel next week,” Victoria Nuland, department spokeswoman, said. She failed to answer a question regarding whether Clinton would be willing to return from Australia to address either the Foreign Affairs panel or the Senate and House closed-door intelligence committee hearings.

“The Committee plans to hold the second segment of this hearing the week of November 26, 2012 and will request Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton testify before the Committee at that time,” the Foreign Affairs Committee reported in an advisory.

Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) wrote Clinton last Tuesday, calling for the State Department to respond to the panel’s requests for information on Benghazi. She wrote: “It is disappointing that we have yet to receive any response from your Department and that we are receiving more information from the press than from the Administration.”

Then too, though somewhat overshadowed by General David Petreaus’ resignation, was the news that the Department of Defense released a timeline in an attempt to reconcile its story line with that of the State Department and the CIA. This was done through an off-camera briefing, with an official who could only be quoted anonymously.  A report from Fox News uncovers several discrepancies in the DOD’s purported timeline:

  • The Defense Department timeline on the night of Sept. 11 begins at 9:42 p.m. local time and states, “The incident starts at the facility in Benghazi.” Right from the start, the Pentagon and the CIA timelines do not match. (The CIA timeline, which was released on Nov. 1, states that at 9:40 p.m., “A senior State Department security officer at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi called the CIA annex and requested assistance.”)

  • A source at the CIA annex that night told Fox News that when they first asked to go and help, they were told to wait.

  • At 10:32 p.m. (4:32 p.m. in Washington), 50 minutes after the incident began, the National Military Command Center, which is the operations center at the Pentagon where Ham is overseeing the operation,  notifies Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey.

  • That means for nearly an hour, no one told the defense secretary and Joint Chiefs chairman that a U.S. ambassador is in peril and his personal security officer has pressed his “personal distress button” which sends an SMS signal back to the command authority in the U.S. and a U.S. embassy has been overrun by attackers.

  • More calls for help – Upon returning to the annex, the CIA team and those that were rescued immediately begin taking fire and at midnight, according to sources on the ground that night, begin making radio calls for help and air support. Almost immediately, they begin taking fire from small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

  • According to a senior U.S. defense official, “This was not one long continuous fight, but two separate incidents at two separate facilities with some separation of time.”

  • However, British sources who were near the consulate and annex that night tell a different story, saying there was almost continuous fire on the annex after the team fled from the consulate.

  • Sometime over the next two hours, according to the official Pentagon timeline, Panetta gives the “go code” for two Marine FAST (Fleet Anti-terrorism Security) teams to prepare to leave Rota, Spain. A Special Operations force which is training in Central Europe is told to “prepare to deploy to an intermediate staging base in southern Europe (Sigonella, Sicily), and a Special Operations team in the U.S. is told to prepare to deploy to Sigonella as well.

  • It isn’t until 2:53 a.m. (about five hours after the incident began) that those orders are formalized by Panetta and the teams are told they can leave.

There is also what appears to be an attempt at obstruction involving the Benghazi hearings. The documents needed in order to prepare for the upcoming hearings were made available for just two days last week – days when most Senators were out of town.  According to Breitbart:

“The Obama Administration’s timing is exquisite; by making the documents available only today and tomorrow, the Senators will not be able to review them to prepare for the hearings next week. Committee staffers are also forbidden to see the material, meaning practically no one will have all the information when the hearings begin.”

A senior GOP Senate staffer was reported to have said: “Funny since no member is in town. The timing and limited access clearly demonstrates the administration cares more about playing politics with the tragedy than accepting responsibility.”
