Angry Obama: Failed Background Check Amendment a ‘Shameful Day’ in Washington

Angry Obama: Failed Background Check Amendment a Shameful Day in Washington

Getty Images

A visibly angry President Barack Obama declared it a “shameful day for Washington” after a group of senators successfully blocked an amendment to expand background checks for gun-buyers on Wednesday, but vowed that it was “just round one.”

Flanked by families of victims of the Newtown, Conn. massacre and by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the White House Rose Garden, Obama said a “minority in the U.S. Senate” went against the wishes of an overwhelming majority of the American people.

“Families that know unspeakable grief summoned the courage to petition their elect leaders,” Obama said. “A few minutes ago, a minority in the U.S. Senate decided it wasn’t worth it. They blocked common sense gun reform even while these families looked on from the Senate gallery.”

He said that while “a majority of senators voted yes to protecting more of our citizens with smarter background checks,” a minority of members were able to use a “distortion” of Senate rules to derail it.

The amendment had been the bipartisan effort of Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) — “a Democrat and a Republican, both gun owners, both fierce defenders of our Second Amendment with ‘A’ grades from the NRA,” Obama said.

“Instead of supporting this compromise, the gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill…[they] claimed it would create a ‘big brother’ gun registry,” Obama said. He said the “pattern of spreading untruths” about the legislation served a purpose: to enrage a vocal minority of gun owners.

He said the opponents of the amendment had “no coherent arguments” about why it should be harder for criminals and those with mental illness to buy a gun, but that senators “caved to the pressure and they started looking for an excuse, any excuse to vote no.”

Obama said there will be some who will call the amendment’s failure a victory.

“A victory for who? A victory for what?” he asked. “All that happened today was the preservation of the loophole that allows dangerous criminals to buy guns without a background check.”

Obama had been introduced at the podium by Mark Barden, whose 6-year-old son Daniel Barden was slain at Sandy Hook Elementary in December. Obama said he has heard some refer to the Newtown families as “a prop” and “emotional blackmail” when they lobbied members of Congress

“Are they serious? Do we really think that thousands of families whose lives have been shattered by gun violence do not have a right to weigh in on this issue?” Obama asked.

He vowed that the fight for more gun control measures is not over, despite the setback.

“All in all this was a pretty shameful day for Washington,” Obama said. “But this effort is not over…we can still bring about meaningful changes that reduce gun violence so long as the American people don’t give up on them.”

He said that if members of Congress won’t listen to the American people, they’ll have to hear from the voters come next election.

“I see this as just round one,” Obama said. “When Newtown happened I met with these families and I spoke to the community and I said something must be different right now. We’re going to have to change…I believe we’re going to be able to get this done. Sooner or later, we’re going to get this right.

Here’s What We Know So Far About the Alleged Boston Bomber Brothers

Major breaks in the Boston Marathon terror attack were made on Friday morning, with names of the alleged bombers gaining widespread attention. Brothers Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, are at the center of an investigation in which authorities are working diligently to find answers. But who are these men — and what’s their story?

While it’s still early, key details have already emerged, bringing faces and potential perspectives of the two men who were previously known as Suspect Number One and Suspect Number Two. Alleged social media profiles and purported online activity did shed some purported light on the Tsarnaev brothers’ views (although, again, it’s not entirely clear if these profiles belong to the men).

Heres What We Know So Far About the Alleged Boston Bomber Brothers

This undated photo provided by the vkontakte website shows Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been on the run, described as “armed and dangerous” and suspected of the Boston Marathon bombing. His brother, Tamerlan, was killed during a violent police chase. The two ethnic Chechen brothers came from Dagestan, a Russian republic bordering the province of Chechnya. Credit: AP

So far, what we know is that Tamerlan and Dzhokhar were like many immigrants who have come to America and assimilated into the culture. On the “Today” show this morning, of of Dzhokhar’s high school classmates spoke of her peer as someone who seemed normal and who was a member of the wrestling team.

Another former student named Lulu Emmons said that she was “shocked” and echoed claims that he was “normal.” One of his former teachers, Larry Aaronson, has also recalled teaching the student in his photography class.

“If someone were to ask me what the kid was like, I would say he had a heart of gold,” he said, according to the Boston Globe. “He was as gracious as possible.”

A profile in the Globe went on to add to this narrative, writing, “Suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing appeared to embody the best of the American immigrant experience, having come from southern Russia, near war-torn Chechnya, more than five years ago, and assimilated into the local Cambridge community and culture.”

Globe reporter Mark Arsenault goes on to confirm some of the details in our previous post — that Tamerlan, who was killed last night, is a talented boxer who wanted to join the U.S. Olympic team. He had hopes of being an engineer and had studied at a local college.

Heres What We Know So Far About the Alleged Boston Bomber Brothers

Police officers run towards a home they believed 19-year-old bombing suspect Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev may be hiding on April 19, 2013 in Watertown, Massachusetts. Credit: Getty Images

The Christian Science Monitor has more about the brother’s back story, based on a photo essay that photographer Johannes Hirn put together:

“Unless his native Chechnya becomes independent, Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia,” Mr. Hirn wrote in one caption.

Other captions depict the elder Tsarnaev as a Muslim who abstains from alcohol and is bewildered by the immorality of the surrounding American culture.

Dzhokhar, as we noted, won a scholarship and graduated from a well-known charter school called Cambridge Rindge & Latin School.

In a telephone interview with the Associated Press, the brothers’ father, Anzor Tsarnaev, told the outlet that his son Dzhokhar is “a true angel” and that his boy is currently studying medicine. The interview was conducted from the Russian city of Makhachkala. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the AP notes, was registered as a student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

“He is such an intelligent boy,” Anzor continued. “We expected him to come on holidays here.”

Ruslan Tsarni, the boys’ uncle, also told the AP that the two have been in the U.S. for the past decade and that they have lived near Boston. This seems to corroborate a NBC News report which read: “Law enforcement officials also told NBC News that the brothers entered the United States with family in 2002 or 2003, and that Tamerlan Tsarnaev became a legal permanent resident in 2007. ”

The Tsarnaev brothers purportedly came from Chechnya, an area of Russia that has long struggled with Islamic extremism, but considering that they’ve been in America for quite some time, investigators don’t yet know why Tamerlan and Dzhokhar allegedly orchestrated this attack.

If, indeed, the men are from Chechnya, Fox News offers up some interesting information about the region to consider:

Reports that the suspects in the Boston bombing are believed to be from Chechnya or a nearby region may have caught some by surprise — rebels in Chechnya are known for their violent and long-running campaign to break away from Russia, but not for exporting terror to America.

But congressional researchers and foreign policy analysts have long tracked a connection between the Chechnya region and Islamic extremists with Al Qaeda and the Taliban. If the suspects are indeed Chechen, analysts told Fox News they may represent part of a jihadi network which has made its way to American soil.

“The Chechen jihadi network is very extensive,” Middle East analyst Walid Phares said Friday. “They have a huge network inside Russia and Chechnya.”

John Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Chechen rebels are motivated by two things – a desire for independence from Russia and Islamic radicalism. He speculated that, if the suspects are Chechen, they could be motivated more by the latter. “They could well be supported by a significant international network,” he said.

Some of this, of course, is speculation at the moment, as definitive determinations have not yet been made.

Russia Today reports that the brothers’ mother has a criminal record of her own:

Apparently also resident in the US, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, the mother of Dzhokhar and Tamerlan, turns out to have a criminal record of her own. On June 13, 2012, the 45-year-old was arrested by the police in Natick, Massachusetts, and charged with larceny of women’s clothing valued at $1,624, as well as two counts of malicious damage to property.

And Tamerian was purportedly arrested for domestic assault and battery after purportedly abusing his girlfriend in 2009.

Stay tuned for additional updates.

Fox’s Bill Hemmer Goes Off on Law Enforcement Officials Who Leaked Wrong Suspect Photos to Press, Including Him: ‘My Jaw Dropped’

Bill Hemmer Say Law Enforcement Fed Media Misinformation on Leaked Pictures

NEW YORK, NY – NOVEMBER 15: FOX news anchor Bill Hemmer attends the 2012 Ailes Apprentice Class graduation ceremony at FOX Studios on November 15, 2012 in New York City. Credit: Getty Images

One of the burning questions this author had in the wake of the New York Post releasing photos of two men it was told from law enforcement officials were wanted for questioning, only to have the debunked by the afternoon, focused on Fox’s Bill Hemmer. On Thursday’s “Fox and Friends,” anchor Gretchen Carlson held up the Post’s cover on-air and noted — albeit cautiously — that select members of the media had been shown the photos, and that Fox’s own Bill Hemmer was one of them.

That left one question: If Hemmer had been shown the pictures and they turned out to be not of the actual suspects, why didn’t Hemmer either stop Carlson or correct the record?

Now it appears we may know.

According to a strongly worded explanation on Friday morning with Carlson and the “Fox and Friends” crew, at least one law enforcement official was feeding the media misinformation.

After host Brian Kilmeade asked if the photos that were released by the FBI yesterday were the ones Hemmer had seen, he responded with a simple, direct “No.”

Then he began: “My jaw dropped yesterday when we were watching that news conference. It was one of those head-turners where you’re like, ‘Whoa! Now this is a curve ball.’”

“There is someone within the investigative unit of this story that has done the FBI a huge disservice,” he added later. “They took images, many many images, I’m talking dozens of images, and they set up websites that just about every American has the ablility to access. And they made it seem and appear that they were in search of other individuals, maybe two, three, or four others. And those images– you know they went around the ether. And people looked at them and they thought, ‘Well, obviously these must be the guys.’ Who was it on the inside who would even take those images, think about establishing a website, and put out misinformation. And I think one of the stories that will be talked about once this is all resolved is how the FBI and Boston police go back and look at their own investigative personnel to find out who had access to it, and who had the motivation to put out bad information… .”

The One-Word Billboard Put up in the Town of 8-Year-Old Victim That Says It All

The local chapter International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) union – Local 103 — in Dorchester, Mass., put up a billboard in honor of the Boston bombing victims, but especially for 8-year-old Martin Richard who was from the town and is the youngest of the three killed in the blast.

“Cowards,” the billboard along I-93 taunted.

“No other word or words came to my mind when I heard of the tragic event downtown Boston on Patriot’s Day when a family from our neighborhood was effected so tragically,” Monahan continued.

The billboard was later updated to include other phrases like “Pray for Boston” as well.

THE BLAZE by BILLY HALLOWELL (MY TWO SENSE: Russia’s growing military prowess should have been tip off that Russia is a problem to be reckoned with. JM)

Do These Social Media Profiles, YouTube Videos Belong to the Boston Bombers?

A social media profile on Vkontakte, Russia’s equivalent to Facebook, shows a page attributed to a man named Djohar Tsarnaev. Naturally, considering what’s happening in the news this morning, there’s a flurry of angry Boston Marathon-bomb related messages being posted on the page.

With 19-year-old Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev (Suspect Number Two) named as one of the two suspects in the Boston Marathon terror attack, the assumption that some media outlets — and the public, at large — have advanced is that the Vkontakte page may belong to the purported assailant.

While this is certainly possible, there’s no definitive proof that this is the case. That said, the page’s contents are intriguing and with explaining. It also appears it is the profile Fox’s Jennifer Griffin has been citing on-air — one she says law enforcement has told her they believe to be authentic.

The profile claims that Tsarnaev currently lives in Boston, his worldview is listed as “Islam” and his interests are “career and money.” Here’s a screen shot from the page:

Does This Social Media Profile, YouTube Video Belong to One of the Boston Bombers?

Screen shot of Vkontakte page

Numerous outlets are connecting Suspect Number 2 to the profile.

The Vkontakte page also claims that Tsarnaev attended the Cambridge Ringe & Latin School — something that may be verified by an old, local blog report. The Cambridge News Weekly listed a man by the name of “Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the school’s wrestling team back in 2011 (the same year that the social media profile indicates that he graduated).

Adding to this element, a former classmate on the “Today” show said that Tsarnaev went to school with her, appeared normal, and that he was a member of the wrestling team. She was reluctant to describe him as “nice,” although that was her recollection of her high school years. The young woman also confirmed that that images being circulated are of the man she went to school with.

See his name listed under “wrestling” on the Cambridge News Weekly, below:

And there’s also an individual by this name who won a $2,500 scholarship in 2011 from the City of Cambridge:

It seems that Vkontakte isn’t the only social media platform that may have been used by the purported bomber. Mediaite is also reporting that some are questioning whether this YouTube video features — or may have been posted by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:

A Twitter account emerged on Friday morning, attributed to “Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev” (username: @Dzhokhar_A). The account started sending messages to the Boston Police Department’s official account. The first tweet sent on Friday morning reads, “@Boston_Police I will kill you all as you killed my brother.”

@ I will kill you all as you killed my brother

Other messages spout similar sentiment, although it should be noted that it seems unlikely that the alleged bomber would launch a Twitter account in the middle of a manhunt. It appears the account is fake, but it has already gathered thousands of followers.

Does This Social Media Profile, YouTube Video Belong to One of the Boston Bombers?

Purportedly fake social media presence aside, the other suspect who died earlier today, identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, is Suspect Number 2′s brother. And he, too, has allegedly been active on social media as well.

Among his purported use of new media is a YouTube account that some outlets have alleged is the purported bomber’s. Registered to the name “Tamerlan Tsarnaev,” the account was created in Aug. 2012. (YouTube account is: muazseyfullah).

One of the clips that is making rounds is described by Mother Jones:

The deceased suspect in the bombing of the Boston marathon, which killed three and injured more than 170, appears to have posted a video extolling an extremist religious prophecy associated with Al Qaeda to his YouTube page.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the 26 year-old brother of the second Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, had a YouTube page where he posted religious videos, including a video of Feiz Mohammad, a fundamentalist Australian Muslim preacher who rails against the evils of Harry Potter. Among those videos is one dedicated to the prophecy of the Black Banners of Khurasan which is embraced by Islamic extremists—particularly Al Qaeda. The videos posted on what appears to be Tsarnaev’s YouTube page may shed light on the motivations for the attack on the Boston Marathon. The prophecy states that an invincible army will come from the region of “Khurasan,” a large portion of territory in central Asia.

“This is a major hadith (reported saying of the prophet Muhammad) that jihadis use, it is essentially an end-time prophecy,” says Aaron Zelin, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy “This is definitely important in Al Qaeda’s ideology.” […]

The older Tsarnaev seems to have posted the video four months ago under the username “muazseyfullah.” According to Zelin, “Mu’az is usually a name,” and “Sayf Allah means sword of God.”

Watch the clip, below:

In addition to purported social media presence, Slate claims that there’s an Amazon Wish List that’s also circulating — one that is allegedly tied to Tamerlan Tsarnaev. While the items on the list are capturing attention, it’s important to note that it cannot be definitively attached to the deceased bombing suspect; also, no items have been added to the list since 2007.

Among those elements present, though, are books entitled, “How to Make Driver’s Licenses and Other ID on Your Home Computer” and “The I.D. Forger: Homemade Birth Certificates & Other Documents Explained,” among others. Another subject of apparent interest for the Wish List owner? A publication called “Organized Crime: AN INSIDE GUIDE TO THE WORLD’S MOST SUCCESSFUL INDUSTRY.”

Does This Social Media Profile, YouTube Video Belong to One of the Boston Bombers?

Tamerlan is also said to have been a boxer who had dreams of being on the U.S. Olympic team. Pictures by a photographer allegedly document his talents in the ring. In one of the captions, Tamerlan is allegedly quoted as saying, “I’m very religious.”

‘Looked Right At Me’: Victim With Both Legs Amputated Wakes Up From Surgery and Confirms Seeing Bomber

A victim of the Boston bombings Monday with some of the most graphic wounds caught on photograph reportedly woke up in a drugged haze after surgery and in recovery, saw the FBI’s pictures of the two suspects that had been released and said one of them “looked right at me.”

Boston Bombing Victim Says Bombing Suspect Looked Right at Him After Dropping Bag

An emergency responder and volunteers, including Carlos Arredondo in the cowboy hat, push Jeff Bauman in a wheel chair after he was injured in an explosion near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday, April 15, 2013 in Boston. This image was cropped due to its graphic nature. At least three people were killed, including an 8-year-old boy, and more than 170 were wounded when two bombs blew up seconds apart. The brother of Jeff Bauman, who had both legs amputated below the knee, said in an interview, according to Bloomberg, that the 27-year-old was waiting for his girlfriend to finish the race when he claims to have seen one of the suspects, wearing a black jacket, a cap and sunglasses. He dropped a bag at Bauman’s feet.

“He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me,’” Chris Bauman, Jeff’s brother, said Thursday in an interview.

Chris Bauman is later reported as saying he has been alone with his brother “many times” when he had told him “every single detail.”

As of Thursday just before 11 p.m. EST, gunshots were fired on MIT’s campus and some officials confirmed the death of one of the suspects in Watertown, Massachusetts, while Friday the other remains at large. An MIT police officer was killed in on campus. Boston suburbs are on lockdown Friday morning as a safety precaution.

Bauman was pictured being rushed from the scene in a wheelchair after the bombings near the finish line just before 3 p.m. April 15. The cowboy hat-wearing man helping rescue him was soon thereafter deemed a hero who helped other victims, and is also the father of a fallen soldier and peace activist who was watching the marathon for those running in honor of his sons.

Bauman’s father said on his Facebook page that his son had to have both lower limbs removed at Boston Medical Center because of extensive vascular and bone damage. He said his son also had to have another surgery because of fluid in his abdomen.

Here’s more from Bloomberg about how the Bauman family found out about Jeff’s condition:

It would take hours before the Bauman family knew what had happened to Jeff. They learned about it the way much of the world did: the grisly image on television of their son being wheeled from the scene, his lower legs destroyed.

Erika Schneider, Bauman’s sister, saw it first. “She called my mom, freaking out,” Chris said. Chris was working at a McDonald’s near their home in Concord, New Hampshire, when his mother called him.

“Chris, you have to sprint home,” she said. “Something’s happened.”

Bauman’s girlfriend was not hurt in the blast. But the victim’s father said his son was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
